【Newsletter#144】The Importance of Reliable Backups

Post by Carrie.Y@AST »

In March of this year, a fire broke out in the data center of OVHcloud, a large French cloud provider, instantly paralyzing as many as 3.6 million online platforms and websites that include many well-known international technology and banking companies. Data was permanently lost and will not be recovered and this is not the first time that public cloud data has been lost. This is why an ASUSTOR NAS is part of a fully complete back up.

Set Up a NAS for Real Control of Your Data
Learning from this and other disasters, it has become clear that relying solely on the public cloud is not foolproof. Any data security is outside of the customer’s control and problems are not discovered until something happens. Since public clouds are not infallible, a real catastrophe may result in lost data, however, storing data in a private cloud in addition to public cloud services adds a layer of protection as stated in the 321 Backup Rule. Using a NAS is equivalent to creating your own independent private cloud space and gives you control over your data. Secure data even more by ensuring you have multiple copies of data while using Snapshot Center to create snapshots to which can be restored when data is unintentionally modified.

Keep Your Data in Multiple Locations for Maximum Protection
Many people think that storing files in the cloud is a complete backup. This is not the case. If you’re storing files in one location, even if it’s a cloud location, that’s not a backup. To have a reasonable amount of data security, it is necessary to follow the 3-2-1 Principle. This means that in addition to the public cloud, backups should be built in private clouds like a NAS. Backups are often tedious so ASUSTOR NAS devices provide cloud backups that can be automatically synchronized between devices and cloud services making backups easy and efficient.
