【Newsletter#173】Making Your NAS Fast with SSD Caching

Post by Eva.W@AST »

A myriad of ASUSTOR devices support the use of SSDs. The recently launched Lockerstor Gen2 series NAS is our most SSD-friendly NAS and in addition to using SSDs as system storage, many ASUSTOR NAS devices including the Lockerstor Gen2 series support SSD caching to accelerate hard drive speeds.

SSD Caching
SSD caching on an ASUSTOR NAS has two modes; read-only and read-write. Read-write mode supports two or more SSDs while read-only mode supports a minimum of one SSD. If only one SSD is installed, then read-only will be the only selection.

Read-only mode
Frequently read data will automatically be placed inside the cache drive. When accessing data, the cache will be read first to see if data is on it. If the data that is being read is not on the cache, then data will be read from installed hard drives. When the cache is full, older data is dumped.

Read-write mode
Read-write mode starts off as the same as read-only mode but also adds the ability to write directly to the cache. When copying to the NAS, data is copied directly to the SSD. Data that is in the SSD can be read back at SSD speeds. When copying to the cache, the oldest bits of data will be dumped if the SSD is full.
