Encrypted folder transfer speeds?

I'm transfering data from a WD mybackup 8tb usb 3.0 to an encrypted folder on a Seagate ironwolf, sata.
i'm using file explorer and the highest speed it gets is +-45mb/s.

i tried copying files from another 8tb on my notebook to another drive in the nas and this is 50mb/s without the above happening, +- 37 with it happening.

I cannot find what the bottleneck is, is it the CPU having to encrypt?

when both transfers are happening 37mb/s from notebook to nas and 45mb/s internally the CPU is 100%.

Encryption is not free, otherwise everyone would use it.

You pay a cost, roughly about 50% of transfer speed in some situations. And much more than that in some other situations.

Obviously the CPU has to do it and it is hard work to be done on-the-fly. Surely you can max it out if you give it other things to do at the same time. Hardware encryption solutions would offload the CPU but these are way more costly and such units belong to a higher segment anyway.

Just my 2c.
