AS-604T - Inactive After Firmware Update

Well that didn't last long! Tried saving a file to the NAS and no response. Ended up powering it down again as before. Did a restart and have a length diag.log file running to over 1600 lines. The following is a copy of the last 26 lines:

The 'traps: streamer' line appears three times in total, two in the above sample and also at 2023-03-10T13:39:57 yesterday. The 'streamer' lines in the above example and a couple appear around the 13:39 time yesterday.

As before, the NAS was last used around 1:30am this morning and the next time was when I tried saving the file to it.

EDIT: I have also checked the router to ensure port forwarding is still enabled, which it is, as a recent torrent file is seeding fine.

Done some more browsing through the log file, and then checking through Transmission. Turns out those lines listed in my previous post all relate to just two torrent files (I wasn't even paying attention to the actual file names) and accounted for around 95% of the lines in the log file. I've now removed the offending torrents, but on looking through the log file a little more thoroughly, I came across a sequence of lines that stood out. I've copied them into a separate TXT file and have attached it.

The first line has 'python invoked oom-killer' in it and the last line has 'Killed process 6937 (Plex DLNA Serve)'. I don't understand the rest of it. Odd thing is that I then tried starting Plex on my TV and it's accessing the files on the NAS with no issues.

Seems like your NAS crashed running out of memory. Highly possible Plex is causing this issue, probably memory leaks somewhere. I'm no longer using Plex so I'm not quite sure but you can try to monitor your memory usage or check with the Plex community as the package is provided by them.

Seems weird as it's happening in the afternoon when it's not being used by me or when I have it set to do maintenance, and as mentioned in my original post, had been working flawlessly until I did the ADM update. I've even disabled a pile of apps. Will have a look for a suitable Plex forum to ask.

This time a restart took 30 minutes as it was rebuilding the RAID or something as there was a lot of disk activity and couldn't access it for those 30 minutes.

Have you tried considering disabling Plex for the moment? Disable all the apps/services except smb and ssh then reboot and monitor your NAS see if it hangs again.

I didn't see any major changes in your firmware change log that could halt the NAS to its knees.

It's tough to troubleshoot without hands-on a different model/firmware so we can only give suggestions based on what you've reported. If it was me, I would probably get a spare HDD, initialize to factory state then start looking for the fault or even downgrade the NAS firmware as part of the troubleshooting steps. This is so that my original data is safe or I have sort of 3-2-1 backups.

I had considered disabling Plex, but not sure it would prove anything conclusively. If Plex is crashing, I'd expect it to crash when it is in use, not when it is idle. It's used between 7:00pm and 2:00am, with maintenance scheduled for 4:00am to 7:00am, yet all the instances of it crashing (the 'Out of memory: Kill process 6937 (Plex DLNA Serve)' line) are in the afternoon. I've now disabled everything bar Plex, uTorrent and Transmission, and yet it's failing now when it never failed prior to the firmware update. I'd been using Plex for well over six months prior to the firmware update.

Unfortunately these NAS boxes were expensive investments for me (even though they're considered cheap), so spending even more money on another HDD for test purposes isn't an option. I'm stuck at home all the time and unable to work, so funds are extremely tight. Even if I could get one, it means running the NAS 24/7 and checking access via the browser in the hope that it crashes. It also means that I have no access to my video files that I watch through the TV, which is essential in keeping me sane.

I've yet to post on the Plex forums, but I might investigate downgrading the firmware using your suggestion from a previous post. Just had a look at the page you linked to (a list of IMG files) and my firmware version (3.5.9.RWM1) isn't even listed. I'll have to dig around to find out what prior versions I can find. I think I'll venture down this route first.

You don't have to get a new HDD to troubleshoot, there's actually a way to do this with whatever you have right now but if you don't have the experience then it would be dangerous to a point of losing your data. This is also not officially supported, hence I'll shall not propose you to that route.

Understood your predicament, that the NAS boxes are expensive investments but then again there's end-of-life for every product out there just like mobile phones. Your model is from 2013 IIRC, I'm not saying it's great but it's good that the manufacturer still update its firmware (security patch wise). I have an old 2014 model NAS that not only have reached its end-of-life (no security updates whatsoever) but the official remote access (main selling point) has also been turned off. Of course there's ways to overcome this, I can still repurpose the device for many other usage like a Pi Hole or reverse proxy.

The best you can do is open a ticket with Asustor Support then try to explain your issues in simple point forms also providing them with the support logs. Keep the rant aside and give them substantial but straight-to-the-point facts about your issues. It won't promise a quick fix especially for an old model but at least they could be made aware of the issue when many send in the report and possibly roll out a fix. As mentioned, I don't have your model. I could always acquire your firmware then test it in a development environment but it will not be the same as the real thing. Updating us that it hung up again without any technical findings doesn't help. Furthermore I cannot request from you the full support log as it could contain personal information. So you'll have to troubleshoot yourself for the most of it with suggestions from us (this public forum community) or with the help from Asustor Support themselves. Some of the suggestions might sound irrelevant but it'll help to isolate the issue. I hope you could find a fix for this, do let us know if there's anything else we can help.

I really appreciate the assistance you have given, and you've done more than I hoped for without access to the same unit. Where possible I've provided as much information as possible, and every post has provided some form of additional information over the original post. I would rather provide a surplus of information rather than the 'my NAS is broken' type of post. I've either uninstalled or disabled every app possible, and the problem persists. If things still persist, I'll disable Plex and have to start using the Raspberry Pi again, in which case I better start updating the libraries on that.

My main annoyance is that it has worked flawlessly since the start and had been working flawlessly with Plex; the last app installed; for about a year, until the last firmware update, and since then I've been having these issues. I only updated the firmware because the nag screen for it was becoming a nuisance.

I'll check out that other thread and maybe compare notes, so again thanks for that heads up.

Reading back the previous post, I was wondering have you tried the proposed HDMI output suggestion? Just hook up to any HDMI output monitor or TV, then plug in a USB keyboard and/or mouse. When you can no longer access the NAS, try hitting the keyboard cursors or move the mouse see if there's any interactions on the display. That would really tell if you NAS loses its network that you can no longer access via any network or the system hangs without warnings in the logs which is still a mystery at this point. Because a hard restart could prevent the NAS writing to the logs (nosync).

You can do these:

1. Enable Plex and most of your usual apps that you would use normally. Ensure you have SSH enabled in the Services.

2. Disable ADM portal, then install Linux Center from the App Central.

3. Open up the Linux Center icon then click on Debian 10 Desktop, click configure, set the display to FHD 1080p and enable HDMI output. Check the Remote Desktop and set the network interface to the available NICs or LAGG (bonding). Finally check on the mount shared folder and click OK.

4. Then click on the Enable, give it a while as it download and install the Debian 10 Desktop container.

5. Turn on your TV/Monitor. After a while you should see Debian 10 Desktop on the screen. If you don't, on the keyboard press CTRL+Alt+F10 (include the function key if required) to switch the VT to 10. Open up the terminal app in the container (CTRL+ALT+T), then enter `ip addr show|grep eth1`, look for the NAT IP something like "inet 10.172.5.2/24 brd 10.172.5.255 scope global eth1" and take note of this IP.

6. You can choose to turn off the TV/monitor at this point and use your NAS as per usual.

If at any time you lose the NAS connection, first turn back on the TV/monitor check if can you interact with the mouse/keyboard? If yes then it's not a system freezing issue. Open up the default browser Firefox within the container then try access your ADM portal: http://10.172.5.1:8000 or whichever port you have setup for the ADM portal. You can also use the terminal to SSH into your NAS host (Debian 10 Desktop is a client container just like docker), ssh admin@10.172.5.1 (or whatever your admin user is), then elevate to root `sudo su -` to start looking for logs etc. You can also view the `dmesg|less` for any specific errors.

I can't think of anything else easier for you but if you can do the above, at least there's chances you can access the NAS to checkout why it happened in the first place.
