Largest hard drive for AS-604T? 8TB?

Post by 604guy »

I have a couple of 8TB drives lying around and an older AS-604T still going strong after 7 years and the original firmware!

I'd like to replace the 2TB drives in a RAID 1 array with 8TB ones.

What's the largest drive that the AS-604T can handle these days?

I plan to use this procedure to upgrade the array:

Your NAS might be 32-bit CPU (similar to my previous AS-304T??). The max volume size might be 16TB. However I cannot make sure of it. You'd better to send a support ticket to asustor to check it.

I think it should be all right if you just replace two 2TB disks (RAID-1 volume) with two 8TB disks (less than 16TB). (Total volume size is 8TB < 16TB)

The CPU is a 2.13 GHz Atom which seem to suggest it's 64-bit. There may be other limitations because at one point, I saw something in writing saying that only drives up to 6TB were supported, but that was early in its life and hard drive capacities weren't that high back then and maybe they didn't have 8TB drives to test.

I was hoping to hear from others who might have said that they successfully used 8TB drives.

Yes, after checked, it's 64-bit CPU. There should be no limitation on 16TB.

It was in an email to me by tech support. And I mis-remembered it. At the time (2017), the stated limit was 10TB. Here's the exact quote:

For the issue mentioned, please refer following link for compatible hard drive model:
https://www.asustor.com/en/service/hd?id=hd
The largest hard drive model AS-604T could support is 10TB.

So it looks like I can use the 8TB drives!

After check the anchor you provided, largest one is 16TB (AS 6 model). The table only lists the tested HDDs. It does not mean that non-tested HDDs are not compatible. I think they only tested 10TB HDDs at that time when you sent a ticket.
