Replace hard disks and reduce number of hard disks

Post by SoGX »

Hello, everybody,

I currently have 7x4TB hard disks in a RAID-6 array in my AS-608T NAS. Is it possible to replace them with 4x12TB drives?
I don't want to change all 7 disks at the moment, because 12TB disks are still relatively expensive and I don't need the space yet.

Regards

This is a guide that describes how to replace all your hard drives with larger ones.
If I replaced only 4 of my 7 4TB disks with 12TB disks and removed the remaining 3 hard disks from the NAS, my RAID 6 would break.
Or am I making a thinking mistake?

OK, I misunderstood what you want to do. I thought that you want to "RAID6 volume-1 with 7 * 4 TB disks" -> "RAID6 volume-1 with (4 * 12 TB disks) + (3 * 4 TB disk)".

If you plan "RAID6 volume-1 with 7 * 4 TB disks" -> "RAID6 volume-1 with (4 * 12 TB disks)", you need to backup all of your data externally, then destroy the old volume and re-create a new volume with the new disks.
