Seagate Ironwolf noise and increasing Load_Cycle_Count

Post by vitosx »

If there are any Seagate Ironwolf HDD owners here, please check your SMART data and post your values for:
9: Power_On_Hours
193: Load_Cycle_Count

My 4TB IronWolf is making distinct head seeking and head parking noises each minute when the NAS is idle (recording: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lp4t6gf1kgxnt ... e.m4a?dl=0).
The noise is not only annoying, this behavior makes Load_Cycle_Count go dangerously fast into 600000 cycles limit this drives are designed for. Users on Synology forum had exactly the same issue and it was addressed by Synology. I am currently waiting on Asustor support opinion on this too, but if you are affected too your data might be in danger.

Some discussions on other NAS vendors' forums reporting similar issues:

My 10tb Seagate Ironwolf is quiet, except during boot time. I listened to your file and I don't have this behavior. Maybe I'm lucky?
Here's the smart value :
9: Power_On_Hours : 362
193: Load_Cycle_Count : 44

Temperature is OK, 33 - 36 ℃ on average.

It looks then it is either issue with my unit or with smaller IronWolf drives. My device model is ST4000VN008-2DR166, with firmware version SC60. I will wait for more feedback, maybe there are some users of such drives on this forum...

According to information on the web Seagate issued a firmware update SC61 fixing the issue for many users of other NAS devices, but only for 6TB and 8TB units. Just out of curiosity I would ask you to check if this is a firmware version you have on your drives, but it is not easily done from ADM web interface. You might need to use commandline smartctl or hdparm tool for that. If this is a trouble, don't bother. I guess it would not help me much either.

Welcome to the club! You seem to have 7-8 head parkings every hour on average (maybe not much to worry about yet, but Load_Cycle_Count is already down to 89 points from starting 100 in normalized point scale after, a guess, 124 days of operation?). Do you leave your NAS idling often, or is it doing some work most of the time?

I currently have similar ratio, but is so low only because I found out some days ago that disabling SMART slows the process considerably:
9: Power_On_Hours 100 (raw 489)
193: Load_Cycle_Count 98 (raw 4107); was at 3887 24 hours ago...

update of NAS is 13 days. Disk is inside my NAS since 06/2016 approximatively, and is working has volume2. Where do you retrieve days of operation ?

I will change internal disk standby from 15 to 30mn, because its useless to have a so little idle time, and started diag tool to see what is awaking this disk in this manner.

By the way, this is my AS5002T.I have an another NAS ( AS3102T ) with same disk inside ( alone ), and have seen the same problem : Load_Cycle_Count is 88,and I have the same hibernation behaviour : disk resume from hibernation after 7-8mn... I will also change standby to 30mn and diag tool is currently running

Your SMART Power_On_Hours had 2983 raw value, so it calculates to about 124 days of being powered on. But I am not sure if the counter goes up when the drive is in hibernated (I think it does).

15 minutes standby time is rather aggressive, it seems your Load_Cycle_Count goes up because of that, not because of some magic action in drive firmware. My drive parks its heads very often even before entering standby/hibernation (which parks heads and additionaly stops or reduces disk rotation). This action is not registered in ADM log.

Regarding disk standby/hibernation - depending on services you have active on your NAS, it might not sleep at all with longer periods. Plex server is one example - when I have it turned on, even without any automatic media scanning, and hibernation configured to 30 minutes - the drive never sleeps.

yep. After setting that to 30mn, I also decided to stop Upnp v1 server, has it was listed has process accessing my disk ( on AS5002T ).
