HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 VS WD Re

Post by eveares »

As I understand it, HGST (Formally Hitachi) are a parent company of WD.

I can get a HGST 6TB Ultrastar 7K6000 HDD (HUS726060ALE610) for just under £230. The most comparable 6TB WD drive seems to be the 6TB WD Re drive (WD6002FRYZ) what costs just under £345.

Is there a good reason for the significant price difference when these drives seem to be near identical. Is it it simply that the HGST one is more popular and in demand than the WD one and thus lowers the price per HDD.

Also I can't find anything in specific about the HGST one supporting TLER/ERC/CCTL, I assume it does as it is listed as a compatible hard drive for Asustor NAS's

The HGST one for £230 seems to be a good offer working out at £37.96 per TB.

I have one HGST HDD (3TB). Personally I don't like it because the sound is somehow loud when accessing it. Other than that, it's good. I'm not sure if it's improved in 6TB model. FYI.
