New fans in AS-608T

Post by statica »

Is it possible to change the 2 fans in AS-608T? Would like something a bit more silent as I think the stock fans are a bit noisy.

I set FAN speed to low. That's very quiet. You may have a try.

If they are as in AS-304T (120x120 with 4 heads pwm clip) i changed mine with a Noctua NF-S12B Redux:

It's totally inaudible.

If you own a series 2/3/6 Asustor it's very likely you won't get XBMC 13.x/Kodi.
But easily you'll end buying a kitchen from UK.

Thanks for the Noctua link. I will check if my AS-608T uses same 120mm 4pins fans as I have tried running on auto but think the disks get too hot so I run at low but its noisy so if the Noctua will work in my NAS as well im ordering 2 of those. Thanks for the help.

Got the new fans and have mounted them in my AS-608T and the difference is incredible!

Before I had it running on the low setting now at same setting I cant even hear that it is turned on...wauw...can only recommend the Noctua fans for AS-608T as it will make a HUGE difference in noise level.

Good to know! My AS-608T has been nearly silent, but I know fans and they only get louder over time. I'll keep these in mind for then.

Interesting.... mine has got slightly noisier overtime. Currently sits in the guest bedroom and my mother-in-law is coming to stay for a month.
I might do her a favour and replace these fans. The Noctua NF-S12B-REDUX-1200-PWM 120mm looks to be available for 19 AUD from a local supplier ;)

The Noctua PWM fans sure generate less noise, it has lower rotation speed and airflow rate

Asustor fans
Y.S Tech FD121225LB (120 mm, 12V, 1800 RPM, 73 CFM, 34 dBA)

Noctua PWM fans
NF-S12B (120mm, 12V, 1200 RPM, 100.4m3/h (59.2CFM) 18.1dBA)

AS-608T has two 120mm fans

i.e. maximum noise level at full speed

(34dBA + 3dBA) vs (18.1dBA + 3dBA) ~ 37dBA vs 21dBA

the tradeoff is lower airflow rate

True that. Beside it, the lower dB noise is obtained with a much better engineered fan.

Said that, the HD will run a bit more hotter (i think we are talking of about 1 or 2 °c).

I had to exchange also the internal 40x40x15 delta PSU fan (wich was *terrible*) with a inaudible noctua NF-A4x10 FLX wich is a 40x40x10 (so some work had to be done to close the 5mm gap) and it has half of the CFM.

No problems so far, totally silent 304T.

My 8 HDDs are running at around 38-40C and that is perhaps 1-2C more than with stock fans but the noise level is now so low that I dont notice the NAS anymore. It is absolutely something Asustor should focus on with new NAS models as the stock fans are easily 2x louder than the Noctua fans. And I think the small rise in HDD temps is worth the lower noise levels as it is an irritating thing to listen to when it is in your living room as my NAS is.

Only thing with the Noctua fans I had to change, was that on the 4-pin connector there is a small plastic bar to show where to mount the connector on a 3-pin plug, so I had to remove that small piece of plastic with a pair of pliers as I could not plug the fan in to the NAS plug without the pastic breaking the plastic on the NAS plug that holds the plug in place. Took me 5 minutes and after that it has just been epic with the drop in noise levels.

Thanks again for the tip.
