Drive Upgrade

Post by ShosMeister »

I'm kinda new to some of this and wondering if I build a solution now with say 4x2TB drives in a RAID 6, and in a few years decide that I need to increase the space or maybe even a drive fails and I can't get 2TB drives but only 4TB drives, will that be a problem or can I just swap them out and the space will increase automagically?

I suggest RAID 10 rather than RAID 6 for four drives. The write overheads of RAID 6 are high and rebuilds if a drive fails (or you want to expand the capacity) will be lengthy, involving all the drives. A rebuild in RAID 10 only involves the one pair of drives.
