I purchased two WD140EDGZ drives, and both error out when trying to create a volume:
Hard disk abnormality detected. An error occurred during volume creation. (Ref. 5051)
I tested both drives in Windows, both pass every test I've put them through. I'll also note this error occurs within like 1/2s of pressing "ok", so it's not finding bad blocks or anything. At least not yet.
2x WD140EDGZ, both have issues

Re: 2x WD140EDGZ, both have issues
Turns out the Asustor device I have is not SATA compliant, so it can't properly read certain drives. Pretty annoying, because I have the EXACT SAME HARDWARE as a standalone, and the drives work perfectly with it, meaning the OS is to blame.
Such a shame; $900 down the toilet because of bad programming.

Re: 2x WD140EDGZ, both have issues
Found two solutions :
1. Rewrite the firmware on the drive so it reports as a WD Red; once you do that, the drive works perfectly.
2. Install UnRAID; eliminates the Asustor ADM software, but all of the limitations go away.
Would be nice if Asustor fixed this though; didn't buy this hardware to turn it into a hardware-hacking endeavour.

Asustor fixed the glitch that was disabling these drives; yay.
