AS3204T v2 - Using unlisted HDD / SATA2

Hello everybody,

I want to buy an AS3204T v2. I have a couple of old Samsung HDDs lying around which I would like to use.
Samsung HDDs are not listed "compatible" at all for this NAS, a further problem might be that my HDDs are SATA2 (datasheet says SATA3 6Gb/s, though I recall SATA-standard to have downwards compatibility?).

Can I expect the HDDs to work or is that pointless?
It is not so much about the money as new NAS-drives are not that expensive. But I have no other use for the old HDDs and considering resource usage etc…

Thank you very much
slim

Hi,

Welcome in this forum.

YES backward compatibility on SATA is supported ... so SATA 3 support SATA 2 disk
All disks in compatibility list are tested (or one model of the family) by Asustor ...
THIS don't said ... others disks can't works as well ... just this list is tested.

Generally list is created by disks available in the market at date of output of the NAS model / series, then updated with new disk offer exist

In my own NAS I have some "old" disk (WD blue) ... the only attention you must have is about disk
... don't use "green" series not really adapted to NAS
... take care about temperature generated by "old" disk
... check bad blocks BEFORE using it
... select a Raid mode (not Raid 0) for security and survey smart information (change "old" disk quickly if warning appear in smart mode)

AND as usual ... do backup (external) ... Raid add security BUT it's NOT a backup

Philippe.

Okay, thank you very much.
So I will test with my old disks and if they do not work/start making problems buy new ones.
Thanks
