Is it OK to use non-NAS drives in Asustor NAS?

Does anyone know for sure if using non-NAS drives in an Asustor unit is a recipe for disaster? While many desktop and shucked drives appear on the Asustor compatibility list, they are also tagged as "may not be fully compatible". As I understand it, non-NAS drives generally have error correction enabled so while they may work great at first, if any of the drives has a error later it has the potential to corrupt a RAID array.

I'm going to answer my own question on this after having read around a lot on the topic. The general consensus among NAS users is that using non-NAS drives in NAS boxes is OK. There are many reports of people having used desktop drives in their machines for many years without incident. I can see in a data center scenario where you might have thousands of drives that you don't want the occasional drive failure to block data requests but in a SOHO NAS situation it's not so critical.
