Kids access to only certain folders

Post by kz2013 »

Right, this is what I'd like to do:

- I'd like set up my 302T so that my kids can access one certain folder.
- This folder has several subfolders; music, movies, photos etc.
- I'd like them to be able to access their folder from their Android phones and/or their ipad and samsung tablet. (and - preferrably from the Internet as well as LAN)

So far, this is what I've done:

- I've created a user named 'kids'.
- Under the home folder,I have created the above mentioned folders.
- Using sftp I'm able to transfer music, videos etc from my computer and into their folders.

I have tried using the aidata app, which is cool as long as I'm playing mp3s, but when I try to play avi files, I get a message saying the file cannot be played.

I want them to be able to stream videos and music from the 302T without having to download the files to whatever device they are using. Are there any apps for Android/iOS that will enable them to log onto the 302T using their username and pw to browse and stream files?

Am I going the right way about this challenge? Are there any easier way to set this up that I'm not aware of?

Any tips or other ways of doing this will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

VLC will see the NAS via UPNP. You could try that

You could also try Plex - http://www.plexapp.com/. Your Asustor NAS has a Plex NAS app (to run the server from the NAS). Install that one and also install either the Android or IOS version of the Plex client (at a slight cost). Setting it all up takes some work but it might be what you're looking for. It works for me :-)

I think Aidata can fulfill your need.
Just create account on ADM for your kids and give them the access right for "kids" folder.
On my android I install "DicePlayer" and "MX Player" for the video playing.
So, I use aidata to login my NAS and browser for the file I wanna to play.
And then click the file and select "DicePlayer" or "MX Player" to play the files.

After a weekend of research, I think so too.

I have already given them a ADM account where they only have access to their 'home folder', my main problem was that their android phones would not play the avi/mp4/mkv files using aidata itself.

Thanks for the app tips, my 10 year old was complaining that the audiobook she was listening to when she went to bed was cut down to 3 minute mp3s, and that she had to select a new track with no possibility of getting some sort of autoplay going. Hopefully one of these apps can solve that problem.
