I have already enabled per disk bad block scanning on a schedule. Now I just noticed I could also run RAID scrubbing. I know they complement each other. But I can't seem to find any discussion of the two together.
I don't want to be doing wasteful work. It seems this should be sufficient:
while bad block scanning continues to succeed on my disks, there is no really value in doing periodic RAID scrubbing.
if bad block scanning finds a problem, then run RAID scrubbing and as soon as practical replace the failing disk.
Scrubbing verifies your data integrity and attempt to correct out of sync parity while badblocks only test sectors individually. You should priorities scrubbing instead, while at it, problematic sectors will also be reported by the system and relocated by modern disks similar to badblocks and smart long test.
