ASUSTOR AS-608T wakes up from hibernation very often

Post by tomsavini »

Hello all :)

I have set my NAS to go into hibernation after 30 minutes.
This works fine.
If I access the NAS from PC or a media device, it wakes up.

The problem is that the NAS wakes up from hibernation several times pr. day without me accessing it.
I have no apps on the NAS that wakes it up.
No PC with the NAS mapped as a network drive.

I have checked the logs, it wakes up a lot of times without any info on what device wakes it up.

I have mailed with support, and they say that it could be a device that automatically scans the network that wakes it up from hibernation.

Does anyone know how to stop this? Any setting that prevents the NAS from waking up each time a device is scanning the network?

Some info;
Disk hibernation is set to 30 minutes
Sleep mode is set no never.
EuP Mode configuration is set to disable
Fan; auto
Adm; 3.2.4.RNN1 (latest update)
Energy saver; set to "Asustor Energy Saver"

I haven't tried sleep mode. If I turn it on, maybe it will help?
I am not sure how this will affect the wake up time if I want to access it from a device.

Any help will make me super happy :)

Did you try "ADM web page -> Settings -> Hardware -> Energy Control -> Diagnostic tool"? It should be able to list the task that wakes up your disks.
Note: you'll need to run this tool, then quit from the whole ADM page. After time out, you can login ADM page again to get the log.

Hello Orion

First of all; thank you very much for your input. I am very happy for any help.

I have tried diagnostic tool once before.
All the logs that I have downloaded is saved on my PC.

When I tried diagnostic tool the document (*.csv file)said one thing; "No processes that continually access hard disks were detected."

I can't remember if I did this though; "run this tool, then quit from the whole ADM page. After time out, you can login ADM page again to get the log."

You are welcome. :D
"No processes that continually access hard disks were detected." means that no disk activities during the detecting period. You may try the tool again to see if you can catch up those activities. Normally, there are processes / services that wake disks up, even if those activities come from outside network (smb or nfs or others). This way is to clarify those activities are coming from internal tasks or external devices.

You'll need to close ADM web page because ADM web page might generate certain disk activities.

In case that you make sure those activities coming from your external devices. Putting your NAS into sleep might be an option. However, you'll need to use another tool to wake NAS up first (for example AiMaster). Then you can access contents on NAS.

Hello again :)

I guess the most easy way is to put the NAS in sleep mode.
Use the AI app to wake it up.

Seems easy, but there is always something, hehe
I tried enabling sleep mode, but the NAS won't go into sleep mode.
It is set to 30 minutes. I tried sleep mode with/without hibernation.
No change, it doesn't go into sleep mode.

I really don't understand this. Going into hibernation has never been a problem, but going into sleep mode is a problem?

I am running the diagnostic tool now, maybe this will give me some info.

Any thoughts?

Here - this is what the diagnostic tool says;

The following processes continually access hard disks, preventing them from entering into hibernation. You can manually close these processes.
lighttpd
crond
More information:

Time,"Service","Description","Storage","Status"
2019/01/05 14:41,"crond","","System Volume","READ"
2019/01/05 14:19,"lighttpd","NetWork Management Tools","System Volume","READ"
2019/01/05 14:19,"lighttpd","NetWork Management Tools","System Volume","WRITE"

The log says that ADM connection (lighttpd) is active periodically. Did you use PC browser or some other mobile apps during the tool working period?

"crond" means that you setup certain periodic tasks. You can check files under /usr/builtin/etc/crontabs to see what are the tasks if you know how to use ssh.

EDIT: You can send a support request to asustor if you don't know how to check "crond". That might be a faster way.
