Re: Upgrade/expansion - help[ needed...

Post by dizzyfish »

Hi - Thanks again for your help with this. All 4 of the disks were present when I ran the command. But I am wondering if you are right about the drive in bay 4... when I look in storage manager, it only shows 3 drives, and shows bay 4 as empty. I am wondering if this was the disk I used when I attempted the expansion.

Please see below for the results of the sudo parted -ls command. Hoping this might give you more of an idea of what is happening...

Ignoring the RAID mds and DoM eMMCs (and its errors, it's normal), I can see only your older 2x4TB and newer 1x12TB, yes you're missing the 4th newer 12TB disk. Does the LED lights up when you insert the 4th disk? Try swapping the 3rd and 4th slots. Ensure it's inserted properly and nothing is blocking the sata ports. Need to determine if the fault is with your NAS slots or its the 4th disk itself that's DOA.

Edited: Your results seems incomplete? Didn't see the complete md0 volume0 list and also missing the md1 volume1. In putty, right-click on the top window title bar, then click reset terminal, run the `parted -ls` command again, then again on the putty window title bar use copy all to clipboard and paste here.

Yup the 4th disk is missing. You should see (doesn't always appear in particular order especially if you attached external disks) bay #1:/dev/sda, #2:/dev/sdb, #3:/dev/sdc and #4:/dev/sdd.

So as mentioned earlier, swap the disks 3 & 4 in the slots 3 & 4 to determine the fault. Then probably RMA either the disk or unfortunately the NAS.

Thanks @Nazar78... I swapped the new disks, and indeed that did prove which one was faulty. Need to RMA it. I just hope that they package it better when they send a replacement, as I am sure that is probably what caused the fault.

I just wanted to say thanks once again for your time and help with this.

Kindest regards - Ian

Update... Just to let you know, I have received the RMA'd replacement disk, and yesterday started to replace/expand the old RAID 1 volume (2 x 4tb disks) with the new disks (2 x 12tb). The synchronisation process took 12 hours+ for the disks, and I have just started the "expand" step.

It looks like the expand process is going to take an incredibly long time. Can I use the new volume whilst the expand is ongoing?

Yes you can still use it while undergoing online expansion but with I would personally leave it as it is so most of the I/O operation goes to the expansion process hence should complete faster.

I also have this mentality to complete something critical such as data manipulation as soon as possible, in case of unexpected circumstances i.e. power failure even though I do have UPS but it won't survive prolonged blackouts.
