AS5304T and max RAM that can be used

Post by andy8 »

Hello,

I have been reading online that AS5304T is able to support up to 16GB RAM (altough officially it can go up to 8GB RAM).
I've also seen some videos where people have succefully installed 16GB RAM.

However, today when I tried installing 16GB RAM on my AS5304T, I found that the device only recognises up to 8GB RAM.

Can someone please confirm if there is any other setting that I need to tweak to make this work ? Or is it not possible to have
16RAM running on AS5304T at all ?

Please check the attached image that shows the recognisable RAM - although I have installed (2 * 8GB Crucial RAM) sticks

Many thanks !

I'm using 16GB, there's no settings just RAM compatibility, I can't remember the RAM spec top of my head but it's the same spec as the pre-installed. Also ensure it's seated correctly.

Thanks Nazar, you were right - I found that the RAM module didn't sit nicely within the slot. I reinstalled it, and my device is able to register the 16RAM - all going good now :)
Thanks for your valuable help !

I just added Crucial RAM 16GB Kit (2x8GB) DDR4 2400 MHz CL17 Laptop Memory CT2K8G4SFS824A to AS53-4T. It was a purchase from Amazon for $35 and I am lucky that it was also next day delivery. The NAS booted right away and, according to the System Information screen, it fully recognized the 16GB installed. I also checked via dmidecode -t memory via SSH, and it was recognized and reported there too. I think for the price it is a fair buy. I will have to see if there is any recognizable performance improvement going forward.

There's little performance improvement with the extra ram except you can run more apps than usual.

Of course you can tweak the system further like turning off the swap so no more swap trashing and the disks sleeps better (not recommended under most circumstances unless you know what you're doing). Use the extra ram for memory caching (i.e. reverse proxy). Or ramfs for compiling/building/transcoding stuffs.

Or even move the 2GB volume0 ADM OS from the disks #2 partition to run on ram at boot so that the disks sleeps even better (falls back to the disks on reboot/shutdown/crash, needs some understanding of the system). This will be more effective if you move all the running apps out of spinning disks to i.e. an internal or external ssd. The bay will stay cool and quiet longer.

Most users doesn't utilize these types of usage so 4-8GB of ram is usually fine but it's great to know it does support 16GB.
