Synology Migration easy?

Post by Drmark »

I have 6 Synology servers, lots of 18TB WD drives.

Synology will not give a path forward on refusing to work with other Mfg drives other than their own for 3-4x the prices.

Is there a way to load 8 18tb drives in the 10 bay and Asustor will migrate them to Asustor server OS and not destroy my data?

Only data on the drives.

How easy is it to understand the Asustor OS coming from Synology?

Or is it pretty much load the Asustor box and do a copy to it?

Last, will it accept 18TB drives? Thoughts, recommendations?

Hi,

Based on my experience :
... 18TB (and more) are supported : https://www.asustor.com/services/hd?ser ... 0TB&class=
... from QNAP or Synology to Asutor (I own all) ... are not really different (except for specific software ... perhaps) and it's just a short time to be able to manage one or another.
... all are based on Linux and network is independent ... just screen on Web Admin or Control Center can be different (cosmetic)

... I don't think it's possible to put as is a disk in another NAS brand, due to the specific partition and management of the space ... all erase and rebuilt partition using a specific architecture (very near but different)
... best solution is to copy using dedicated link (network at 1GB, 2,5GB more perhaps and with link aggregation if copy is multiple.

But lot of solution exist depends of the "real existing situation"

Between Qnap and Asus would you have a preference?
I have folders on an intranet and stream video.

Hi,

hard, hard .. ;) as we said in French (translation is approximative ...) : My heart is torn between the two of them
BUT at this time ... I prefer Asustor (also for streaming), but for my own reason and history with QNAP & Asustor team (I am a user and an integrator for QPKG & A PKG (packages))

... and it's not easy to write : I prefer Q or S when you are on an Asustor forum

Did the deed, slowly replace Synology. the 65 took the 18TB drives like a champ. Copying data now to it.
