Adding new drive to RAID5 takes a long time.

Post by satow »

I added a new 12tb drive to my RAID5 volume, which already had three 12tb drives, to make a total of four 12tb drives.
So far it has taken 2 days for the added new drive to get to almost 50% merge.
The AS6508T seems to fall asleep during the merging process.
It should not do that when you add another drive to the RAID5 array.
Is that normal?
Or is there a better setting I can use so it merges faster?

A 8TB could take up to 48hrs depending on several situations. And it shouldn't go to sleep or hibernate the disks, probably best to open a ticket with Asustor Support about this.

There's ways to speed up the process but it's not officially supported as it would impact the NAS user's experience during this period. I'll just give you some hints:
dev.raid.speed_limit_min
dev.raid.speed_limit_max
stripe_cache_size
readahead
AS5304T - 16GB DDR4 - ADM-OS modded on 2GB RAM
Internal:
- 4x10TB Toshiba RAID10 Ext4-Journal=Off
External 5 Bay USB3:
- 4x2TB Seagate modded RAID0 Btrfs-Compression
- 480GB Intel SSD for modded dm-cache (initramfs auto update patch) and Apps

Typical is 3-5 days. Depending on the sector check etc and size of drive. It's doing it's business.
