Configure spare drive with no available slot?

Post by _evilpanda_ »

I've recently rebuilt my Nimbustor 4-bay system as:

volume1 = 2TB SSD for admin, system apps, Docker etc
volume2 = 3x8TB as RAID 5 Array

I have a spare matching 8TB drive that I would like to configure as a spare/replacement in the event one of the drives fails, but as I've used all of the available bays/slots on the Nimbustor, how can I configure this drive as a spare? It doesn't to work via USB, are there any options using mdadm via ssh?

Thanks in advance.

"mdadm" might be able to setup spare disks. However if you do, you are running on the risk that ADM might change it / unmount it. If I were you, I'll change to another model with more bays.
