Typical 1Gbps ethernet does around 110+/-MB/s. My 2.5Gbps around 290+/-MB/s (NAS/Switch/Router/PC), 300MB/s on a perfect uncongested day with jumbo frames enabled (edited: avoid jumbo frames unless all device supports and for specific application).

Your 3.4GB of data should take around 30secs on 1Gbps ethernet. Edited: plugged out of my calculations 1024MBx3.4/110MB.

Minus the Thunderbolt, what it's like to transfer directly from the NAS->Router->Mac? Put in a huge single file transfer like 10GB to exclude size calculation overhead.

It's time to introduce us to your router. To find loose ends, you can connect the NAS directly to your Mac bypassing the router using static IPs. Isolation is one of the way to troubleshoot.

I transferred a different file which is 16.63GB.

From NAS to MAC the file took 03:55 minutes.
The route it took is NAS / Netgear Unmanaged Switch / Google Router / MAC

How do I connect the NAS direct to the MAC?
If I connect it to the MAC via Ethernet, I will lose the internet connection.

If, as is the current setup, both Mac and NAS are connected to the switch, does all data go via the router?
Sorry, but this is not a familiar area for me.

So that's about 80MB/s from NAS to Mac, albeit not the typical 110MB/s, it's still ok. This shows the issue is somewhere in the Mac specifically the Thunderbolt with the worst transfer. I'm no Mac expert but at least we now know where's the weakest link.

You don't need the internet to troubleshoot LAN issues. Just connect using a single RJ45, one end to the NAS, the other to the Mac, loose all other ports. Before you do this, go to each device and set the adapter's IP, NAS's to 192.168.1.1 then Mac's to 192.168.1.2. Subnet is 255.255.255.0. Access the NAS using its static IP 192.168.1.1 from the Mac.

Most importantly revert both back to DHCP when you're done troubleshooting else you'll need to recover the IP using the 2nd port on the NAS or back pin reset procedure if that too doesn't work.

Thank you.
I’ll figure out how to do that and will update.

Just a thought before I start changing settings.
Once I have transferred the files on the external Thunderbolt drive to the NAS, I do not intend to use the drive again.

That being the case, if the transfer speed of files from the NAS to my MAC is acceptable, is it worth undertaking that test?

There's no risk but frankly it's all up to you.

I'll give it a go.
Just didn't want to risk losing internet access.
Incidentally, when you fire up your PC, do you have to enter your username / password to make the NAS visible? I'm having to do this each time I reboot my MAC.

Do you mean the PC will show the NAS samba shares without providing the credentials on the next reboot? No I don't have to re-enter as I chose to save the login when first prompted. It's stored in the Windows credentials. For Mac it should be stored in your KeyChain.
