**TICKETED* < Symlinks not working with Photo Gallery 3?

**EDIT ** -- I have made a ticket with Asustor support and will follow up here.

Hi fellow ADM users!

I have a pretty simple challenge.
So, I've installed Photo Gallery 3 to backup photos from my phone. Great.
However, I'd like to move the app's default storage folder to a different volume (alongside my other photo collection). It appears to be hardcoded to "Home/MyPhoto/SmartUpload" and there is no setting I can find to change this.
(Do apps have configs? hmm)

So, I tried (in a shell) moving the directory to a different shared folder, (also on Volume1) and creating a symlink.

ln -s /new/folder/path /Home/MyPhoto/SmartUpload

This seems to half-work. Uploading photos goes to that directory. However the app doesn't seem to read it at all, both on my phone and the computer, the gallery remains blank.

So, is ADM or the Photo Gallery 3 app incompatible with symbolic symlinks? Is there a way to change where Photo Gallery 3 stores uploads?

cheers,
Jordan

I have also tried
mount --bind
but same problem, the photos disappear from Photo Gallery 3.

I have also tried modifying the photo gallery setting.conf
Code: Select all
/usr/local/AppCentral/photogallery/etc/setting.conf

and replacing ["Home"] with ["Photos/Jordan"] but with no luck.
It automatically updated to this

Code: Select all
....
[username_goes_here]
path = ["Photos\/Jordan", "Home"]
....

but it continues to write to Home/ dir which is not what I want.

Hi,

I don't have a large usage of photogallery v3.
BUT the SmartUpload folder is not directly in /home (not /Home) but in USER folder in /home ???? Home is perhaps a sort of variable for /home/user BUT can't be reflected by Linux that ignore this.

ex. for admin user it's : /home/admin/MyPhoto/SmartUpload/ (equal to : /volume1/home/admin/MyPhoto/SmartUpload)
it's important for the access right ...

if I have time during the day, I will try to move some photos and use link and them move SmartUpload and create a link ...

BUT the first problem to solve is WHY did you have the folders MyPhoto/SmartUpload in Home ???? did you try also to create new source folder ?

Philippe.
NB sorry I have only few minutes to answer before leaving ...

Hi Phillippe, you're absolutely correct -- it is inside of /Home/$USER/MyPhoto/SmartUpload/. Photo Gallery 3 made these folders, not me.

Hi,

I have run a test (in the train) using mosh ...
create a user, connect it to photo-gallery 3
import some photos
verify that all run as expected (wait for thumbnails creation)
create a folder in another share under new_user owner
move SmartUpload from /home/USER/MyPhoto/ to the new_share folder
check that access right and owner/group are correct
create link (soft) in /home/USER/MyPhoto to the new SmartUpload folder position
check access and owner ...
all is OK
... restart photo-gallery 3

all is empty as not existing ... so seem that simlink is not followed ...

move back to /home/USER/MyPhoto ... all run again as expected.

I suggest you to open a ticket to Asustor support

Philippe.
N.B. sorry I have no time (and no interest to photo-gallery) to run more tests.

By the way,
It sounds like the next version of Photo Gallery 3 (beta) in the next month will have this feature added, the ability to change destination directory. Fingers crossed it works as hoped.

That would be great news. I hope that I can also use that to keep photos from iPhone and iPad separated. Currently Photo Gallery 3 throws all of these in the same directory.

I have meanwhile installed the updated version of AiFoto3 on my iPhone and iPad. I am indeed able to select a different destination directory for each. And thus am I now able to keep iPad photos separate from iPhone photos. This is precisely what I wanted.
