Hello
Im considering buying a AS5010T to server as a back up unit for a Qnap 10 bay NAS. The reason behind this is that the AS5010T is half the price of QNAPs 10 bay options. However I have a few questions.
Both Qnap and Synology have the option for adding SAS and USB3 expansion enclosures. Does Asustor have anything to match this? If so is there a Asustor equivalent of storage pools so that all dives may be grouped into one volume?
I intend to populate the device with 10 x 6TB WD Reds in Raid 6. Can this then be expanded with future larger capacity drives?
Thanks
AS5010T Expansion

Re: AS5010T Expansion
The short answer is No... not at this time, anyway...
The long answer is yes, but you have to buy an additional unit that's not an Asustor product.
As it is now, Asustor has no extra "add-on" enclosure that integrate into the existing pool. You can definitely add on any number of USB 3, 2 or 2xeSata drives, though, and depending on the enclosure you get it can support Raid through the enclosure itself. Nothing is integrated via the ADM itself.
I have an Orico 5 bay Raid-5 enclosure that is populated with 5x 3TB Seagate drives for a total of about 11TB of storage hanging off of one of the USB 3 ports. As this enclosure is HW raid, I set the raid levels via dip switches on the unit itself, and then have to format it through a Windows machine before the NAS sees it. Once this is done, though, the NAS has no issues seeing it at all. I've gotten really good transfer rates with it on USB 3, but haven't tried it with eSata yet. (Sent me the wrong cords for it, too lazy to buy what I need to test.)
I've also hung any number of USB 2 and 3 devices off both my 202T and 7004T, depending on needs, with little problems. When you first plug in the drive it's not available right away. the OS has to run a test on it first. On the Raid enclosure this took about an hour on the 202T and on the 7004T about 5 minutes.
If you are worried about speed, don't... the Raid enclosure was able to stream multiple 1080p 20Mbps videos without a problem, via Plex Media Server while hanging on the 202T. On your proposed device it'll fly!

Ok thanks for the reply.
One more question. I've been reading that only 8 drives in a RAID config are supported and not 10. Why is this?

Really? It does not make sense. Can you share the internet anchor that mentions about it?joelang1699 wrote:Ok thanks for the reply.

Hello joelang1699,
I think (am almost certain) that this specific guide was written when 8-disks were the maximum number of supported disks in an Asustor NAS (608). It probably hasn't been updated to reflect the newer units. You might want to keep one or two slots free for MyArchive. You can always expand later (though that will probably take a week to sync).
Best regards,
Kapitein Haak.

Re: AS5010T Expansion
Ok sounds about right.
Is the use of a "system disk" mandatory or can the OS and its apps be run from one RAID6 10 drive volume as i really need all 10 drives?

Hello joelang1699,
I believe the "system disk" isn't mandatory. Just toss in those 10x 10TB harddisks and create a RAID-6 volume (it will sustain 2 disk failures). A rebuild of this size will take ages and with RAID-5 you will be vulnerable during the rebuild.
Best regards,
Kapitein Haak.
