as5002t as an HTPC

Post by areyoueye »

Hello I am looking to use this system as a multipurpose home server and have a few questions:

How is the quality of the direct HDMI play back of 1080P HD movies?

Can I SSH directly into this box as root and change the sshd_config file? I want to make sure I can setup an ssh tunnel with this as my server.

Are there any VPN options?

Can I setup a webserver on this system?

Thanks for all the info. As a followup to the 1080p HD playback question:
Is the 5002t powerful enough? Or should I consider a different model?

Hi
I use AS5104T playing 1080p HD is very smooth...I think different is CPU core and memory.
AS5002T dual-core/1GB memory v.s. AS5104T Quad-core/2GB memory (I upgrade to 4GB)
If you want pipeline access storage or to do other things as the same time. I recommend you AS5002T upgrade to 2GB or more. ;)

HEY!!! You DO know how to use Google! Wonders never cease!

To the OP... The HDMI output from these devices can support 1080p out of the box on the 50xx and 51xx series and 4K on the 70xx series. In order to actually view the movies through the device you need to install either XBMC or Kodi and I'm sure there are some configuration issues you will need to work through. Plex Home Theater MIGHT be an option, but that install is going to be through PuTTY access and will require a third party app from the plex Forums to get running. If you get it working, post your notes here, I'm looking to buy a 70XX soon and kinda interested myself. (Plex Media Server and Plex Home Theater on the same box is almost a woody for me... just saying...) :)

I ssh into my 202T all the time, but have never configured a tunnel to do so. I've done this both inside the network and via WAN connections, and WAN configuration is done through port forwarding on the router. I'm sure there are more secure ways of doing it, but my use case now doesn't require it, so haven't looked into it.

VPN has 2 options. One is as a VPN server, which is actually built into the ADM interface, or a VPN client, which is an add-on app from App Central. I've used both, as needs require, but have found it easier to use the client for the most part. I'm sure, again, there are levels of security I'm missing, but again, my use case doesn't require mil-spec security, so haven't gotten to that level at present.
