Is the AS-608T right for me?

Post by m4a2000 »

I work in a video program for arguably the largest three year high school west of the Mississippi. Over the last 12 years I have been with the program, as a student and now as tech support person, I've used everything from Beta to BlueRay, PCs & Macs, servers and firmware devices, and one of the biggest issues, next to making sure some student doesn't do something stupid on live TV is storage space.

Back in 2009 I was able to talk a Microsoft friend of mine to donation some old data servers and they have been the backbone of our program for the last five years. With us finally moving to HD video and looking into storing our old VHS archives we need more space. 4 Terabytes aren't what they use to be.

I've been looking at the AS-608T, hoping to get it through B&H, and figure that it would work for us seeing it would have enough space even if I were to set it up into a RAID 1. So here are my questions:

*How easy can it connect to a domain and how well can it handle the groups from the domain and their permissions?
*Are the permissions only changeable through the AS-606T GUI or could I change folder permissions via normal Windows Explorer once I login via the network?
*How well can the system handle large file transfers between multiple systems at once(max count of 16 people logging at one given time)?
*Are there any known issues with a file between 20 GB to 100 GB in size (broadcast quality video takes up A LOT of space) being stored for long periods of time?

More questions to come...

Maybe you can refer to http://download.asustor.com/college/en/ ... onnect.pdf for the domain setup. It is pretty easy. Also, there are quite a lot video and documents available in http://www.asustor.com/online/College?lan=en#221

You can also try the demo site first: http://www.asustor.com/live_demo

For the file transfer, I do not see any issues as I move back and forth hundreds of movies and video around my external drives, iMac and Windows laptop (5gb up to 50gb etc..)

Thanks! Well I just got word from the other IT guys in my district that I can get it so if things go great I could have my hands on this piece of hardware in two weeks!
