Can you help me choose my first ASUSTOR?

Postby Pathocyte » Mon Nov 13, 2023 9:27 am

Hi there.

I plan to order a NAS this coming Black Friday considering it’s really near. I’m not tech savy so I’ll be spending some time in the resources added to this subreddit labeled as tutorials.

I’ve watched a lot of videos and considering what I need and the country I live in, the best option for me was to go with a prebuilt NAS instead of doing one myself.

I’ll exclusively be using it store and stream my collection of dvd and Blu-ray media with Jellyfin. I’m not going to be adding mkv files directly, instead I will use handbreak to change the media to mp4 and with this also reduce the size.

By the way, there may be 3 maximum users streaming at one time, although not that frequent. Frequently I think there will be 2.

The two options I have considered are the Asustor drivestor 4 pro and the asustor A5304T (nimbustor 4)

Thank you for your advice.

The AS5304T has a major advantage over the AS3304T that it starts with twice the amount of RAM (4GB rather than 2GB) which can be increased to 16GB* but the AS3304T's RAM can't be increased at all.I've seen reports on failures during large file copies that were fixed by increasing the RAM in the NAS.

The AS5304T's CPU is also hugely better than the one in the AS3304T.

Look at what's in people's sigs on here and you'll see the AS5304T is very popular. I've had mine for nearly four years and, while it's no longer my main NAS, it's still very capable.

*Yes, I do mean 16GB. Although these embedded Intel CPUs only officially support 8GB (or 16GB for the current models) they all seem to work perfectly with twice that.
