No Installed Drive, External USB Only, AS1102T
Can I install an AS1102T using only external USB drives? This would be without any internal SATA drives. Thanks, Sam C

Officially no, it requires at least one internal disk (ADM OS initialized) to operate properly.
AS5304T - 16GB DDR4 - ADM-OS modded on 2GB RAM
Internal:
- 4x10TB Toshiba RAID10 Ext4-Journal=Off
External 5 Bay USB3:
- 4x2TB Seagate modded RAID0 Btrfs-Compression
- 480GB Intel SSD for modded dm-cache (initramfs auto update patch) and Apps

Re: No Installed Drive, External USB Only, AS1102T
Thanks for the info. I was told by a vendor that an installed, internal drive wasn't necessary. So my next question is the Asustor compatibility table. The first filter is Select NAS Series. I assume that would be AS 11. But when I filter it for SSD, there are no options. Are there any options for SSD for the AS1102T

No problem but think you need to question back the vendor as they typically sells items without fully understand how it works internally. The ADM OS resides on the internal disks after you initialize them for the first time, handed over the rootfs by the smaller DOM. Without unofficial modifications, it will not allow to boot from external disks.
Your questions including the SSD compatibility is best answered by the manufacturer, you could contact Asustor support for clarifications, https://www.asustor.com/en/about/contact_us. I have several older SSDs that's not in the compatibility list but works perfectly. YMMV.
