ASUStor NAS Controll via Google Home (Assistant)

Post by Zaragosa »

Would love to see a feature or app to allow voice control of NAS via Google Home to stream audio and/or video to device (Smart TV, Chromecast, Tablet, etc).

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this can already be done, with the right media suite on your NAS and client devices.

These voice recognition devices have an API that is used to set up different devices. Then the suite you are using also needs to support commands being sent to it, through its own API. As long as the voice recognition system supports the application suite you are using, you can get your music, TV shows or movies on the devices that you want to watch them on.

For instance, Alexa has a plug in that supports Plex Media Server right now. So you can have an Alexa device start a movie or play music on your Smart TV, through the Alexa speakers, or on other client devices that Alexa has been set up to support through Plex's various client apps.

So to make this work with any NAS only requires the right application suite to play your music with, a voice recognition device that has support for the suite, and a client device that can run the client app for that suite.

Here is Plex's support article for setting this up with Alexa: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/115000320808
There is a dedicated support sub-forums you can look at here: https://forums.plex.tv/categories/voice-control

Plex Media Server is the app you install on your NAS. Plex Media Player can be installed on a variety of devices, or dedicated client apps for those other devices that don't support PMP. (Smart TVs, Fire TV, Google Chrome, Roku, iOS, Android and many many other devices.) Then you need the app for your Google Home that can call the Plex Media Server and your streaming device's client apps. This is your current hold back from seeing it work now.... Plex doesn't support Google Chrome, but they do support Alexa....

This is going to take a bit of work on your part, even after you get all of the pieces in place. You're going to need to look at what your devices can stream and whether your NAS can support the media you have stored on it to those devices. Take a look at some of the links in my signature for some tricks on optimizing your media and NAS to help with this. (Including media preparation.)
