AS6602T M.2 NMVe Storage & SSD cache

AS6602T M.2 NMVe Storage & SSD cache

Postby Davejd_56 » Wed Sep 15, 2021 2:09 am

I have a AS6602T currently configured with –
• 2x4TB HDD’s as RAID1
• 1x1TB SSD NMVe in M.2 Slot 2 as SSD cache.
• So all are deployed as Volume 1.
This is a new set-up and as yet Volume 1 has no data stored on it that I can’t lose.

This is the configuration I want to move to –
• 1x1TB SSD NMVe in M.2 Slot 2 as Storage deployed as Volume 1
• 2x4TB HDD’s as RAID1 deployed as Volume 2
• 1x1TB SSD NMVe in M.2 Slot 1 as SSD cache deployed as Volume 2

I have searched through this and other forums, but have been unable find anything definitive about whether you can successfully set up one SSD M.2 slot for storage and the other M.2 slot as SSD cache. I only have the one SSD presently, so don’t want to purchase another without some confidence it will work.
Can anyone advise if my proposed configuration is possible?

Your "2x4TB HDD’s as RAID1" is volume 1 and this can't be changed as it's the first volume (technically it's second, because the 2GB volume 0 on the same disks is the OS mirror array) when you first initialize the NAS. If you want the "NVMe in M.2 Slot 2 as Storage deployed as Volume 1" you'll need to start fresh which is to reinitialize the NAS with the slot 2. It's however recommended to have the OS initialize in RAID 1/5/6/10 (for your case raid 1) and not running as a single medium i.e. only in one M.2 slot. So in this case it's better to initialize both the M.2 slots as raid 1 but you'll lose those slots for cache. On the existing setup, you can of course add another NVMe as a storage volume 2 instead of cache.
