Streaming

Post by GBForrest »

dumb question, How can one stream videos and photos from your NAS to any computer not on the LAN, like a computer at work. I have tried everything. The only thing that I can get to work is file explorer, which downloads the files, not streams. Any suggestions?

Sounds that you setup "cloud connect" successfully, because you can access "ADM"? file explorer. I think you can consider plex app. I do not use plex, however there are somebodies in this forum being happy with it. You can install Plex Media Server on NAS from App Central. Your PC/mobile phone should install plex client.

Is there not another way to use streaming than plex?

You may try to enable samba port forwarding in your router. (port: 137, 138, 139, 445) However, many of routers are not allowed to do port forwarding for ports lower than 1000. But you can try. If port forwarding is successful, you can connect your nas shares through internet and you can play media file by your PC's default player.

Sounds cool. Is it LAN only or does it work when I'm visiting a friend?

I just connect with AiData and browse to the file I want to watch and choose it. It opens my video player and plays. I do it over my 4G-LTE all the time.

After you setup port forwarding successfully, you should be able to access your nas (samba connection) anywhere. If you are searching a streaming way for mobile phone, zakspop provides a good one. :)

That's right. I'm surprised that your router can support port forwarding below port 1000. You can try to map a network drive from a PC outside your home. You can then use any media players on your PC to do streaming.
Command line to map a network drive: "net use * \\cloud_id\public"
